The term 'bloodlands' refers to a stretch of territory between Russia and Poland where it is locally believed that all things grow from the blood of those who have died in battle. The same stretch of territory is a flashpoint today.
The term by extension refers to other territories where people have fallen or have been displaced. The title refers to how the conflicts that rage today, from between states or stateless actors, have led to the displacement of people, increased fundamentalism whether Islamic or Christian, nationalism and how all of these reactions and outcomes have led to the rise of the right, increased xenophobia and the breakdown of long standing political structures and order. By extension we increasingly appear to be staring into an abyss.
The lyrics on the album covers the above and is specific to the displacement of people through conflict, and economic and environmental change. The lyrics also cover nationalism, fundamentalism and there is a more pointed critique of Australian Government policy and community attitudes regarding asylum seekers and offshore detention.
